An étude is an instrumental musical composition designed to provide practice material for perfecting specific technical skills. Emerging in the early 19th century alongside the rise of the piano, the form evolved from pedagogical exercises into concert repertoire. While some works remain focused on traditional instruction, 20th-century compositions have expanded the genre to include pieces requiring unorthodox techniques.
