Jacob Burckhardt
Jacob Burckhardt (1818–1897) was a Swiss historian and a foundational figure in the study of cultural history. After studying theology and art history in Basel, Berlin, and Bonn, he held teaching positions at the University of Basel and ETH Zurich. He is best known for his influential 1860 work, The Civilization of the Renaissance in Italy, which pioneered a holistic approach to analyzing historical periods through their social institutions and artistic output.
