Late Gothic painting achieved one of its main works with the Karlsruhe Passion, whose anonymous master, together with Konrad Witz and Martin Schongauer, number among the most important paintings of the 15th century on the Upper Rhine. The five panels show scenes of Christ's Passion, from his entrance in Jerusalem to his entombment. The original paintings, which were combined in one altar retabel, were torn apart. They can now be shown together again for the first time and, in addition, they can be placed together in one context with other paintings, early copper engravings, woodcuts and drawings. This assembly elucidates various iconographic starting points and goes into the formal design in one of the most important genres of Medieval depictive art.
