Even with his spectacular early work, the Vienna Secession building (1898), Joseph Maria Olbrich (1867–1908) s쳮ded in creating a seminal structure that was described by Nikolaus Pevsner as the “pioneer of modern design.” Ten years later, his last works—especially the famous exhibition building and Hochzeitsturm ( Nuptial Tower ) ensemble on Mathildenhöhe in Darmstadt (1908)—struck the arc to architectural Expressionism. During this final decade of creative work, Olbrich proved himself to be a universal artist.
